Showing remnants of the Arctic Monkeys, four-piece alternative/indie-rock band Glass Caves have released their debut album, Alive. What can I say? The band are off to a great start. With electrifying vibes resonating in the record, and vocals that echo from track to track, it’s something quite accessible for anyone that wants something that will satisfy their thirst for indie music.
Opening with “Go” came with good-decision making. It’s a stellar track that ignites the hope of a promising band. The rhythm and structure of the track falls perfectly as it transitions between flawless guitar and drum work. It’s an effortless track that shows off quite a charmer and an easy weapon to keep a trained listener hooked.
Unfortunately, there’s repetition in the album that doesn’t take long to show itself, with “Out of Control” following the same pattern as the first track, with generic lyrics and its instrumentation, ensuring the track doesn’t shine through as much as the record’s opener. Though it has the potential to be a better track, you can’t ignore the fact that there’s amazing solo work made from the electric guitar; creating both anticipation and suspense.
The album starts to dwindle a bit once “Tonight” comes on. It feels like the band have added it as a filler and something that doesn’t really highlight anything new. The tracks that come after it don’t add any value either, following the same pace and rhythm – almost like they’re following a similar formula that make these tracks a little less interesting.
However, the last few tracks come up to be quite promising, picking the album up to speed with “This Road” and “Be Together”. Both songs enhance a much more lively approach, a direction in which the band is able to immerse themselves in with uplifting vibes and tunes that are well-fitted for a summer drive, alongside golden sand and crystal clear blue water.
There’s nothing wrong with staying in your comfort zone but if Glass Caves plan on expanding their fan base, they need to try and step out of it. They need to put their feet in the deep end to showcase more of their talent and from there on, they can expect great things coming their way. In the meantime, there’s a few stellar tunes here to get the ball rolling…
