Single Review: Iron & Wine – I Went Walking Far From Home (2010)

Iron and Wine, the moniker behind which 36 year old American songsmith Sam Beam operates, has become a central name in American nouveau folk music. “I Went Walking Far From Home” is the new single which was released in November for sale through independent records stores, with the digital download becoming available late last month.

The lead track off this three-song single is a departure from the guitar-based sound, prevalent in much of the previous work from Iron and Wine. However, “I Went Walking Far From Home” still maintains Beams apparently natural ability as a lyricist. There is beautiful simplicity to both the words and the music, which gradually builds with harmonized backing vocals and layers of electronic sound. This track is at once both uplifting and eerily beautiful.

“I Went Walking Far From Home” will be featured on Iron and Wines fourth studio album, entitled Kiss Each Other Clean, due for release in the new year.
