Adelaide Fringe Review: The Inflatable Church is Europe’s quirkiest wedding venue

One thing that the Adelaide fringe is known for, is bringing strange and unusual events to the city. One of those is The Inflatable Church, which has come all the way from the European Fringe circuit. It’s like a giant inflatable jumping castle, but all the fun happens on the inside.

It’s unholy matrimony, where anyone and anything can get married. There are something like 300 costumes available to dress up in style and celebrate the union of a lucky couple. The Valentine’s Day event that this reviewer attended had a young couple and a veteran couple renewing their vows after more than 30 years together.

Dance tunes such as “Crying in the Chapel” and “Murder on the Dance Floor” keep the vibes up as the congregation assembles. The ceremony itself is mercifully short, unlike a traditional wedding, but hilarious nonetheless.  The main attraction is really the fun of dressing up, and making new friends along the way.

It’s a fun vibe from the moment you walk in and peruse the open air closet. Assistants help choose the costumes, as outrageous or sublime as you’d prefer. Makeup mirrors for the final touches and before you know it you’re inside the church, waiting for the blushing brides. There’s a “ring”man (wink, wink) and a guard of honour at the conclusion of the ceremony. Post wedding photos and a return of the borrowed garments and it’s all ready for the next show.

With around a dozen weddings a day, it’s fast paced, and all good fun. You can either book a wedding party to tie the knot, or simply come along as part of the congregation.
