The award winning production, Tribes, written by Nina Raine and Directed by Susanna Dowling is coming to the Ensemble Theatre in Sydney.
The play that prized the 2012 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play at the 2012 New York Drama Critic’s Circle Award and scored the 2012 Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best Play is inviting audiences to delve into the true meanings of language and love.
The storyline of Tribes follows the life of Billy who is born deaf and taught to lip-read by his intelligent Jewish family. He befriends Sylvia who was born to deaf parents and is slowly losing hearing herself. Sylvia begins to teach Billy how to communicate using sign language, while his family struggle with their son’s independence.
“The characters in Tribes are scathing and antagonistic – although the arguing… is seen as proof of love. The irony is that I don’t like conflict at all. I’m quite a coward: I’ll do anything to avoid an argument” said playwright Nina Raine about the production.
Tribes will play at the Ensemble Theatre, 78 McDougall St, Kirribilli, NSW, 2061
from Thurs 26 May, 2016 until Sat 2nd July, 2016. For more info head here.
