Sydney’s iconic Carriageworks is set to open an enormous expansion in January 2017 following a recent partnership with UrbanGrowth NSW and the acquisition of The Clothing Store, a heritage part of the historic Railway Workshops network in North Eveleigh. Announced today, the arts destination will put out a public call for expressions of interest for artists to participate in a subsidised studio program and deliver workshops as part of the Clothing Store, a facility which will include 12 new artist studios as well as creative industry and community spaces.
The Clothing Store, which was built in 1913, will allow Carriageworks to further expand on their commitment to the local community, operating the facility for at least the first 12 months as a space allowing and encouraging locals to take part in arts and cultural activities that speak to the area’s rich culture and history.
“We are excited to work with Carriageworks to activate this important heritage building given their track record of delivering dynamic arts and cultural programs that support artists and other cultural organisations within the precinct”, offered North Eveleigh Program Director Duncan Read. “UrbanGrowth NSW is committed to creating community facilities that recognise and celebrate the unique history and contemporary nature of this important part of Sydney”.
Owners Railcorp have licenced The Clothing Store to UrbanGrowth NSW Development Corporation for three years, and while long term use is still being discussed it is hoped that what Carriageworks do with the space will help inform ideas for future uses.
