Daniel Muggleton is a Sydney-based comedian and rising star on a national tour following his International debut in 2023. Muggleton offers a taste of uncomfortable humour joining a fine lineup of performers this year at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
It is a pleasure to catch him at an intimate performance in QT Melbourne, where he delivers daily shows during the festival. Muggleton’s signature red tracksuit contrasts with the full-glam venue, which offers mini martinis at the entrance at a perfectly lit bar. He is funny already! The mustache, hair, and outfit shape Muggleton into a hillarious character with political jokes in order. And he delivers these exceptionally.
The show titled Blinded By The Whites promised to be a foul-mouthed dark humour comedy experience. It may have been the intimate crowd or the fact that Melbournians could be the easiest people to offend but I felt that Muggleton was giving a cautious performance. He went hard on the pedophile jokes but seemed to shy away from the racism subject. Which is understandable considering he got heckled with “Invasion Day” when talking about “Australia Day”. I guess it is a relief that there seem to have been more people sensitive to racial issues in the crowd than predators. I wish he went a bit harder on his hecklers but he seemed to have missed a few opportunities to laugh at the crowd’s expense and made the choice to stick to his material. Maybe he toned it down a little – the fancy QT can be intimidating for a performer in a tracksuit (my husband and I are both still buzzing about the bathroom by the way).
All that said we were laughing for a whole hour! With themes ranging from COVID to bux nights, Muggleton had something relatable in store for everyone to laugh at. His genuine nature and notable intelligence shined through the silliness of a comedy show and I was enjoying every minute of it. I am sure we will see Muggleton on a way bigger stage next year and I’ll be there for it!
