It was announced this morning that the Disney Theatrical Group are bringing Disney’s The Lion King back to Sydney for a third time. The announcement comes some ten years after curtains last shuttered on the iconic musical in Australia.
Across its two runs in the country, The Lion King was seen by nearly four million people – which is just a drop in the ocean of the 120 million who have seen it live on stage around the world.
Returning to Sydney’s Capitol Theatre makes sense – it was here that the original Australian production premiered in October 2003, followed by a second run in December 2013.
Kylie Watson-Wheeler, Senior Vice President & Managing Director of The Walt Disney Company Australia and New Zealand said in a release:
“We are thrilled to welcome The Lion King back to Sydney, the place where it all began in Australia over 20 years ago. The Walt Disney Company ANZ is proud to be one of only three places in the world where, alongside Broadway and The West End, we self-produce musicals, directly employing hundreds of Australian theatre professionals. Thank you to Destination NSW and the New South Wales Government for partnering with us once again to bring this iconic piece of theatre back for a new generation of fans to experience.”
Casting information for the new Sydney production will be announced at a later date, as well ticketing information.
