In just a few short weeks, Brisbane’s La Boite Theatre will bring an exciting reimagining of Shakespeare‘s Macbeth to life, putting the three Witches at the centre of it all.
Co-directed by La Boite Theatre’s Artistic Director Courtney Stewart and Lisa Fa’alafi (Co-
Blending dance, movement, text, and sound, and with the Witches (Roxanne McDonald, Mel Ree, Nicole Hoskins) taking on all other roles in the show, the production speaks to the interconnectedness of all things, and of how our actions ripple through the natural world. With the Witches recast as healers and grounded in the forces of nature themselves, this is no longer just the tragic story of one man’s desire for power, but an exploration of the consequences of human ambition as a whole.
While the cast has several Shakespeare credits between them, Macbeth will mark the first time co-director Fa’alafi has taken on the Bard. She said:
“I think, in the current climate, examining words that relate to power that are written by a white man, reinterpreted by a bunch of women of colour, is really exciting. How can we pull the story apart and how we can interpret it or somehow make those words our own and relevant to the stories that we want to tell now?”
La Boite is Australia’s longest continuously running theatre company, and in 2025 will celebrate a century of storytelling. It’s a milestone not lost on Macbeth‘s co-directors.
“I’m excited about the next 100 years. La Boite is opening the door to more of us – more people of colour, more ways of seeing the world – and I feel so excited about what’s coming,” Fa’alafi said.
Stewart added: “In our centenary year, we understand that to leave a legacy, we need to be constantly creating one. We want to launch into another century of changing our world, one story at a time.”
Macbeth will take to the Roundhouse Stage at La Boite Theatre, Kelvin Grove, performed under a giant, reactive Bilum canopy, hand-weaved by three female master weavers.
Previews will take place March 6th/7th, with opening night on March 8th. Performances run until March 22nd, with an Auslan interpreted show set for March 14th.
