Malthouse Theatre gives Marlowe’s Edward II a 21st century makeover this July

Christopher Marlowe’s Edward II is set for a radical makeover in a new production for Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre opening this July.

Adapted by Australia’s Anthony Weigh, who is currently an Associate Artist at the renowned Donmar Warehouse Theatre in London, this Edward II speaks with a contemporary voice, referencing 21st century lust and politics.

Unlike his father, the bloody and notorious Edward Longshanks, Edward II is a King who fails to lead, preferring instead to bestow his attentions on his male lover. Edward makes no secret of his controversial affair, failing to read the growing contempt he has sparked within the nobility.

Directed by Malthouse’s Artistic Director, Matthew Lutton, the production is promised to be a ‘perverse, sexy and provocative look at an inglorious leader who pays the ultimate price for making the personal political’.

The cast includes Paul Ashcroft (Cruel And Tender, Howie The Rookie), Johnny Carr (The Boys, Suburban Mayhem), Marco Chiappi (The Mystery Of The Handsome Cab, Love And Information) and Belinda McClory (The Doctor Blake Mysteries, The Matrix).
