“We’re in church” said one fellow audience member as we walked into the basement theatrette of the Butterfly Club. Rows of recycled pews and framed Elizabethan portraiture sit inside this quirky performance space, but what followed was far from biblical. An hour of clowning, astronaut-themed burlesque and bubble-gum art. Now, that’s the kind of religion I can get down with!
Seasoned cabaret performer Sophie deLightful brings us ‘Diary of a Power Pussy’, an entertaining romp into what it means to be a boundary-pushing woman in the modern-day world. And she definitely hits the ground running, starting with her self-penned empowerment anthem “Vagina’s Where You’re Really From”, and she ain’t wrong. Strap yourself in, and get ready for an hour of fierce cabaret.
Sophie deLightful brings a sassy, sparkling and sizzling energy to cabaret performance that would make Sally Bowles proud. Her fabulous leopard print leotards have graced stages from London to our humble shores, and her Australian Power Pussy shows have proved to be a roaring success.
The show features a rotating cast of guest performers from Sophie’s Power Pussy shows, including bubble-gum themed clowning, an impressive hula-hoop display, and burlesque dancing. Audience participation is actively encouraged, so down a few glasses of pinot amongst the eccentric depths of the Butterfly Club bar before you head on in. You’ll be belting out a few Beyoncé tunes before you know it.
Singing songs from Nina Simone all the way to Fiona Apple, there is something for everyone (as long as your musical tastes lie in the realms of feminist power anthem, and, really, don’t everyone’s?)
Apart from the odd opening-night scheduling difficulties, and a couple of technical hiccup, ‘Diary of a Power Pussy’ went off without a hitch. So, grab your feather boa, don your sexiest stilettos and unleash your inner Power Pussy. In the immortal words of my childhood feminist heroes, The Spice Girls, “Girl Power!”
Don’t be shy, and get in- vulvad with ‘Diary of a Power Pussy’! It will be ovary before you know it.
Diary of a Power Pussy is playing as part of the Melbourne Fringe until 17th September at The Butterfly Club. Tickets are available here.
