Black Swan State Theatre Company have announced their 2017 season, boasting two world premieres, and five plays by Australian playwrights.
The 2017 season will see the company farewell Artistic Director of nine years Kate Cherry, who helmed programming for the upcoming productions. Clare Watson will take over the role, beginning her time with the company sitting in the director’s chair for an adaptation of Swedish horror Let The Right One In.
Let The Right One In will show in the Heath Ledger Theatre, joining other mainstage productions Once In Royal David’s City, psychological thriller Switzerland, and Samuel Beckett’s Endgame, directed by Founding Artistic Director Andrew Ross.
Taking over the Studio Underground are four shows – a record for Black Swan’s smaller stage – including the Pulitzer and Tony winning I Am My Own Wife, Will O’Mahony’s Coma Land, and The Eisteddfod, from Lally Katz.
“I have planned the 2017 season as your loving and committed outgoing Artistic Director of Black Swan. As such, I have chosen to plan the season like a constant gardener,” said Kate Cherry, in a media release. “I have pruned to ensure there is space to honour the past, celebrate the present and assist in launching the future. I have planted seeds in the hope that new plants will emerge, offering delight, solace and a healthy sense of carefully managed chaos. And so the 2017 season is a plethora of possibilities, a joyous garden running wild, but nurtured with love and shaped by experience.”
2017 also marks the 20th anniversary of the company’s partnership with Rio Tinto. Celebrating the milestone, resident writer Hellie Turner will present ANZAC story The Lighthouse Girl, a Rio Tinto Black Swan Co-Commission.
