Sir Matthew Bourne’s Lord of the Flies set for exclusive Melbourne run in 2017

Making its Australian première at Arts Centre Melbourne in 2017, Sir Matthew Bourne‘s adaptation of William Golding’s classic Lord of the Flies will see up to 24 Victorian men and boys invited to workshops designed by the renowned choreographers’ team, with the possibility of performing in the production next April.

Sir Matthew’s adaptation of Lord of the Flies is produced in conjunction with his dance company New Adventures‘ charitable arm Re:Bourne, which offers upcoming talent the opportunity to work with more established presences. The focus is not just on performance, but many aspects of the production process.

In 2014, the production toured the United Kingdom, working with over 8,000 young people in dance related activities during it’s 80 performances, with 260 of those young people performing on stage. The short run at Arts Centre Melbourne marks the first time the production will take place outside of the UK.

Potential performers aged between 12 and 22 will be chosen through an outreach program that will deal with some 25 organisations across Victoria, and invited to take part in special workshops, with teachers trained by the Re:Bourne team. The most promising amongst the attendees will be invited to audition for the main production next April.

Claire Spencer, CEO of Arts Centre Melbourne says: “This is an extraordinary opportunity for Victorian boys and young men, many of them from backgrounds or circumstances where pathways to performance are limited,”

Those who do not go onto audition for Lord of Flies will be invited to remain in close contact with Arts Centre Melbourne, opening them up to plenty more opportunities further down the line.

“All of us at New Adventures and Re:Bourne are absolutely delighted that Arts Centre Melbourne will host the first international presentation of Lord of the Flies. Everyone at the Arts Centre has firmly embraced the values of this project and we are proud and honoured to have forged this unique international collaboration.” says Sir Matthew.

Sir Matthew Bourne‘s adaptation of Lord of the Flies will be performed at Arts Centre Melbourne from April 5th – 9th 2017.
