The Best of the Fest: 5 must-see events at Vivid Ideas 2018

Vivid Sydney is coming to town and this means our city will be adorned with colourful light displays. This festival also comes with a host of wonderful shows, especially those talks and events that fall under the Vivid Ideas banner. The AU Review have put together our top 5 must see Vivid Ideas events.

1. Game Changer: James Cameron- City Recital Hall, 27 May

The famed director of Titanic, Avatar and Aliens will be describing his passion for science and ground-breaking technology with our very own Adam Spencer. Also expect some great banter about that Bishop’s Knife trick, why Jack couldn’t get a spot on Rose’s door and talk about all those blue men (and we’re not talking about the blue men group!)

2. IQ2 Debate: #MeToo Has Gone Too Far- Sydney Town Hall, 5 June

The IQ2 series is dedicated to covering the biggest issues of our times by engaging in smart and civil debates. This one on the #MeToo movement looks set to follow this trend and is particularly important in the wake of the Weinstein scandals and the birth of the next wave of feminism.

3. The Inaugural Mark Colvin Conversation: Are Schools And Society Encouraging Or Stifling Creativity?- City Recital Hall, 3 June

This event is dedicated to the late broadcaster and journalist Mark Colvin and tackles the intriguing topic, “Are schools and society fostering or stifling imagination?” The panel is hosted by Julia Zemiro and features a group of educators, writers, commentators and artists like: Megan Washington, Lucy Clark, Robyn Ewing and Benjamin Law, among others.

4. The School Of Life Presents Hugh Mackay On The Good Society- 220 Pitt Street, 12 June

Social researcher and bestselling author Hugh Mackay draws on his 60-year research career to deliver a presentation about the kinds of people and society we will become. Mackay will get us thinking about how courage, wisdom and imagination can help pave the way towards a more compassionate and less anxious society. This ultimately sounds like some fabulous solutions to all of the world’s problems…

5. The Future of Food & Drink- Museum of Contemporary Art, 27 May

For those people who love their food, whether it be fast, slow or anything in between then this is an event for you. Westmont Pickles hosts a conversation with some of the best makers and producers from the food industry like brew masters Young Henrys, wine stars DRNKS and creative chefs like Mitch Orr. Warning: this chat may leave you hungry to hear more.
