Legendary production, The Glass Menagerie by Tenessee Williams hits the Malthouse Theatre in Melbourne after a successful season in Sydney. Described as a ‘memory play’ by Williams herself, Eamon Flack’s production of The Glass Menagerie proves to be an intelligent, entertaining and passionate performance. His production won the 2015 Helpmann Award for Best Play and has received an impressive five star rating.
The year is 1937, and the formidable Amanda Wingfield shares her run-down apartment with frustrated and shy adult children, Tom and Laura. Haunted by their past, the three embark on a journey to break free. The opportunity rises when Laura encounters a ‘gentlemen caller’, but will it be the answer? The characters work together to attain freedom, but as the play moves to a devastating conclusion, audiences are only left with grief for the family that is a stones throw away from collapse.
Starring renowned Australian actress, Pamela Rabe (TV’s Wentworth) as Amanda, and award-winning actor Luke Mullins as her son Tom, William’s characters are vividly brought to life through the powerful portrayals of vulnerability and desperation. Both Rabe and Mullins received rave reviews and praise for their performance.
The Glass Menagerie will run from 8 May until 5 June at Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre. Ticket costs start from $35 for under 30s, $50 for concession, and $65 for adults.
