Love Your Bookshop Day returns on October 9th

Love Your Bookshop Day (LYBD) is back again! Taking place on October 9th, this year’s major events will be entirely virtual, so that everyone – locked down or not – can join in the celebration.

Long before we were confined to our couches, the local bookstore was the place to go for all your literary needs. Author events, book clubs, and, of course, knowledgeable and genuinely enthusiastic staff drew bookworms back time and time again. And with increased reading forming part of many people’s lockdowns, there’s never been a better, or more important time, to show a bit of love for the local legends that make those bookish dreams come true.

Robbie Egan, CEO of the Australian Booksellers Association said:

“Books and reading have been a lifeline for so many people over the last year as we’ve sought both entertainment and quality information from our local bookshops…

Wherever you are, locked down or free to roam, we need books and bookshops more than ever. So let’s celebrate, together and apart, and make some noise about Australia’s incredible, unparalleled network of bookshops.”

There’s big things planned, including a bookshop focused episode of Leigh Sales and Annabel Crabb‘s podcast, Chat 10 Looks 3, a dedicated LYBD video from entertainer Jimmy Rees, and the Festival of Cancelled Events at Brisbane’s iconic Avid Reader, giving local authors who saw their in-store appearances cancelled over the past year a platform to celebrate their latest work. Plus, if you move quickly, you can still enter the LYBD writing and colouring competitions HERE (closing October 1st).

Stay on top of your your local stores’ socials for events from your faves, and if you haven’t quite found your bookish home yet, our Books Team are working on a list of some of their best-loved bookshops to help you out – keep your eyes peeled for that one in the run-up to October 9th!
