Nvidia have kicked off their CES 2015 press conference with the unexpected reveal of a second version of their Drive PX in-car computer. This new machine is the equivalent of 150 MacBook Pro’s and it will drive your damn car.
The Drive PX 2 boasts 12 CPU cores and 8 teraflops of processing power. Nvidia has also said that it’s capable of 24 deep learning tera ops which will make it perfect for self-driving cars. Honestly, these specs are absolutely ridiculous, cutting edge stuff.
Introduced by CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, the device’s crazy amount of power is apparently required for building a driverless vehicle capable of getting around without causing accidents. Deep learning has been a big focus – you can arm a car to the teeth with sensors and maps but if it doesn’t know how to react to sudden changes as they happen, then disaster looms.
“We aren’t realizing the full potential of our vision unless we can solve city driving,” Huang said. “Bikers are in the same road you are… People are sometimes following the rules and most times not… It’s very chaotic and very hard.”
