It would appear that Bungie’s wildly popular shoot-aliens-with-your-friends-simulator Destiny is still set to receive a full and proper sequel, but it’s likely we won’t see it until 2017. Destiny publisher Activision confirmed the unnamed sequel today during their earnings report for their 2015 fiscal year.
Bungie mentioned last December that during Destiny Year Two, they planned to move their focus from big expansions like last year’s The Taken King to seasonal events with microtransactions on the side for those feeling flush with cash. The developer has run several events already including the Halloween “Festival of the Lost” event, the Sparrow Racing League event over Christmas and Crimson Days which kicked off earlier this week. Fans have been left restless by these events so far, with many wanting more substantial content drops following The Taken King.
To mitigate this, Bungie have said that they intend to bring fresh content to the game as part of future events but details have been scant as to the nature of that content or when players may see it arrive. That said, Bungie does still plan to release another “large new expansion” during 2016.
The news of a fully-fledged sequel comes only a month after a report from Kotaku that claimed Bungie, uncertain of how to move forward, pushed back Destiny‘s still-unannounced-but-we-all-knew-it-was-happening sequel from Q3 2016 to sometime in 2017.
This story is still developing.
