Kingdom Hearts III gets new trailer, and a 2018 release window

The long-awaited third instalment in the mainline Kingdom Hearts RPG series has gotten a brand new trailer at Disney’s D23 expo in Anaheim, California. On top of this rare and startling glimpse of the game in action, developer Square Enix are finally talking launch details.

The trailer itself shows of a sizeable chunk of gameplay, including a reveal of the new Toy Story themed world that sees Sora, Goofy and Donald battling Heartless in Andy’s room before being confronted by Woody and Buzz Lightyear. (All of the trailer’s dialogue is in Japanese so if you’ve never heard Donald Duck speak Japanese, prepare to have your mind thoroughly blown.)

One of the trailer’s most interesting pieces of information comes at its conclusion with the reveal of a date card that reads “Coming 2018,” which is the closest Square Enix have ever come to formally announcing a release date.

From what we can see in the trailer, the game looks to be rather far along — combat looks very similar to what fans know and love, and the character models are of the same ridiculously high quality the series is known for.

Kingdom Hearts III is coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4. It will be the first mainline entry in the series since Kingdom Hearts III in 2005.
