Nintendo confirms they’re taking another crack at a Super Mario movie, hell quite chilly today

The unthinkable has happened. Hell has frozen over. The day we thought would never come has arrived at last: Nintendo have confirmed that work has begun on a new Mario movie.

Confirming the news as part of a spray of announcements on their Twitter this afternoon, Nintendo revealed that they have partnered with Illumination (Despicable Me, The Secret Life of Pets) to create the new film.

Further, Super Mario Bros creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri are on board as producers.

This marks Nintendo’s first foray back into the film world since the legendarily awful 1993 film starting Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. The company has been notoriously hostile toward anyone seeking film or television rights to their properties ever since, jealously protecting them from any further embarassment in Hollywood.
