Another year, another Sonic the Hedgehog game…sort of. This remaster of Sonic Generations, one of the more popular titles in the franchise is long overdue with some shiny new next-gen graphics, smooth gameplay and higher frame rates, which means Sonic fans will be revelling in the speed and visuals of this impressive-looking game.
Also, a new chapter revolving around Shadow the Hedgehog (this time voiced by the movie actor Keanu Reeves) has been added, giving fans an ultimate collection to revisit the classic title and get excited for the third movie releasing next month.
Thanks to Five Star Games and SEGA, we were fortunate enough to get hands-on with the game and play a few levels on both the Sonic Generations and Shadow portions of this game, it looks like we are in for another great Sonic game to get us through the summer.
Visually, the remaster is stunning. The basics of the original have been completely revamped. Classic Sonic looks and speeds through the levels spectacularly. We got to play Green Hill Zone Act 1 and Chemical Plant Zone Act 1. Modern Sonic has gained the power of drop dash, which helps you speed through the levels at a clean 60FPS that plays like a dream.
On the other side, Shadow has some brand new levels, he gets his very own section of the game. The levels are huge, it took me a good 7-8 minutes to get through each one. While the pace isn’t as fast as Sonic, it does require precise timing to be successful.
There are plenty of alternate paths and secrets that I missed while trying to get through my session. These levels have a different rhythm to the Sonic levels and I can’t wait to play the full game.
Sonic X Shadow Generations was the perfect preview game for PAX Aus 2024 and with long lines of players keen to jump in and experience the blue hedgehog’s latest adventure, the blue blur even showed up for photos with fans.
Sonic X Shadow Generations will be released on October 25th on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Stay tuned for our official review.
