Players who own Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox One will receive a free upgrade to the Xbox Series X version. The upgrade is possible thanks to the Smart Delivery tech built into the new console.
Smarter not harder
Smart Delivery, announced today among a list of new info for the Xbox Series X, lets users play current and next-gen versions of the same game for the price of a single purchase. Smart Delivery will be available on all Xbox Game Studios titles, and open to any third-party developer who’d care to use it. Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red put their hand up.
Gamers should never be forced to purchase the same game twice or pay for upgrades. Owners of #Cyberpunk2077 for Xbox One will receive the Xbox Series X upgrade for free when available. https://t.co/nfkfFLj85w

Value proposition
CD Projekt Red has long understood the value of a square deal. It wanted people to know that The Witcher 3 would have lots of free DLC, along with meaty paid expansions. Just recently they’ve continued to take player feedback on board, updating the Switch version of The Witcher 3 to support cloud save functionality from PC.
It’s certainly not something you see every day. When Grand Theft Auto V launched shortly before the end of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 era, Rockstar simply asked players to pony up again for next-gen versions. Similarly, Sony relaunched The Last of Us on PS4 as a “remaster” after only a year. This practice has traditionally been a good way to make extra money on a beloved title, making the precedent CD Projekt Red are setting even wilder. How many other developers will follow suit? We watch with interest.
Cyberpunk 2077 launches September 17 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC. There’s no concrete street date for the Xbox Series X just yet, though it is predicted to launch in November.
