2018 Barunga Festival bringing Saltwater Band, Lonely Boys and more to Katherine Region

At this year’s Barunga Festival, the 30th anniversary of the Barunga Statement will be commemorated as this week, the line up for the iconic cultural event has been unveiled. Taking place out in community from June 8th – 10th, the Barunga Festival will be hosting the likes of the Saltwater BandB2M and Shellie Morris – an all Indigenous line up that will be attracting over 4000 people to the Katherine region.

Of course, Barunga has long been a centre to cultural collaboration, appreciation and celebration – the festival itself has become a platform for people to learn, share and become immersed in our country’s indigenous culture.

This year will see a festival first, a fusion of Indigenous Australian culture with that of Taiwan, as Taiwanese artist Suming will perform in this area of the country for the first time. An unmissable tribute to Gurrumul is also part of the program courtesy of the Saltwater Band and dancers, while groups from all over the Territory will be performing including the Dhumbul DancersRirritjingu Clan Dancers and more.

100% drug, smoke and alcohol free, the Barunga Festival is bringing a range of cuisine to punters, while art and cultural workshops will also be returning for another year, maintaining the core energy of the festival as a priority.
