As a live music photographer, the pandemic and resulting lockdown has been pretty bleak. Instead of going to multiple gigs a week, and capturing the joy and essence of live music, like everyone else I’ve been confined to home counting my legs.
During this extended period of reflection, one of the seasoned photographers from the pit, Kevin Bull from the Central Coast had a lightbulb moment of creating a book of images from gigs in Australia, capturing the 12 months prior to lockdown. The images are of Australian artists, taken by local photographers. Proceeds from the sale of the book go to Support Act, a charity that assists the music industry.
This has not been a straightforward undertaking, as Bull explains: “I knew I had a big job on my hands when thousands of images started coming in. The artist approvals also took a lot longer than expected, but I feel that the resulting collection of Australian artists presents a wonderful snapshot. You flick through the pages and you can visually see what was occurring ‘live-on-stage’ during the year leading up to lockdown.“
