The highly acclaimed duo that is The Civil Wars graced Stubb’s for a special ACL “afterparty” on Saturday. Comprised of Joy Williams and John Paul White, the duo are known for their spirited interplay, beautiful harmonies and catchy melodies – all of which came through in droves during their 75 minute set. It’s perhaps to easy a comparison to make, however, if you’re a fan of The Swell Season you’re definitely in need to check them out.
Placed in front of as simple a background as you get, the no frills set was all about the music (as it should be!) and included just about all of their breakthrough album Barton Hollow, plus one newbie from their forthcoming sophomore album, performed with beauty and precision in front of an appreciative and respectful crowd at one of Austin’s most famous venues. Well known for their covers, the band returned for an encore that started with MJ’s “Billie Jean” and ended with “Poison and Wine”, originally released in 2009 on the EP of the same name, seemingly taking requests from the crowd in the process.
The band will be in Australia in March for the Heavenly Sounds series. Tickets are on sale now. You can bet we’re excited for these intimate shows in unique acoustic settings.
