AFRO CELTS & ANGUS & JULIA STONE TO PLAY WOMADELAIDE 2011
11-14 March 2011, Botanic Park, Adelaide WOMADelaide – Australia’s favourite outdoor festival of music, arts and dance from around the globe todayannounced a sneak preview of its 2011 festival line-up with legendary supergroup AFRO CELT SOUND SYSTEM andAustralia’s famed folk pop darlings ANGUS AND JULIA STONE topping the list. The internationally acclaimed Australian duo (Angus and Julia Stone) said they’re thrilled to be a part of WOMADelaide. “We’ve heard so many good things about WOMADelaide from friends and family around the world. They speak of a festival that invites different sounds and colours of music to the stage so we can’t wait to be a part of it,” they said. Extended to now run over four nights and three spectacular days of music, arts and dance, WOMADelaide 2011 will again bring the world’s finest artists to one of the most beautiful outdoor festival sites in Australia – Adelaide’s Botanic Park- between Friday 11th and Monday 14th March, 2011.
The 2011 event will host over 400 incredible artists from more than 25 countries, transforming Adelaide into a celebration of cultural diversity and global sounds as thousands of fans across the nation make their annual WOMADelaide pilgrimage. WOMADelaide Director Ian Scobie said WOMADelaide 2011 will take audiences on a journey of discovery “with a programme of breathtaking artists making their WOMADelaide debuts. We are also thrilled to bring back one of our audience’s all-time favourites, Afro Celt Sound System, a decade after they thrilled us with one of the festival’s most memorable Stage 1 performances ,” Mr Scobie said. In addition to Angus and Julia Stone and the pioneering Afro Celt Sound System, WOMADelaide 2011 will include: the globally celebrated genius of UK-based musician / producer NITIN SAWHNEY in a DJ set and as the Musical Director of the All-Star Gala on the final evening of the festival; the energetic punk-inspired Mongolian folk band, HANGGAI from China; the stunning ten-voice Creole Choir of Cuba who recreate musical treasures from Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Cuba; dazzling accordionist Alan Kelly and his famed ALAN KELLY QUARTET from Ireland; the sonic voodoo rhythms of Egypt-based Sudanese group RANGO from Sudan; the aural beauty of shehnai and flute master RAJENDRA PRASANNA from India; the frenetic Dabke sounds of Syrian folk-pop superstar and wedding singer OMAR SOULEYMAN. These amazing artists are just the tip of the iceberg with around 50 more remarkable acts from every corner of the globe to be announced on 17 November
