Django Django’s third full album since their sophomore Born Under Saturn – released back in 2015 – stirs mixed emotions for many fans and fist time listeners alike. Notably for this one, it feels like the influences behind the music aren’t as clear as songs gone past. The majority of the LP edges somewhere towards a synth-y, dance nu-wave while at the same time flailing somewhere in between nowhere.
But maybe we’re being harsh. Nothing falls further than the great expectations we set up for ourselves, especially when the diving board is as high as Django Django’s first self-titled release.
Many critics have gone full steam on critiquing the title tune, “Marble Skies”, however the entry-level melody is just that, a starting point or perhaps a set-up for better tracks to come. It’s cheerful, it’s structured, it’s the very inviting doorway into themes and motifs revisited. There are a few unsung heroes on the LP that have been overlooked. “Real Gone” is the club hit unknown, while “Sundials” turns back to a poetic meandering, a Nilson android on acid.
Prediction: “In Your Beat” will be the hit, not “Marble Skies”. Let’s all mark it in our calendars to revisit this article and check back in on Django Django’s success, say October?
Regardless, Django Django’s generous style to squeeze as many synths and melodies into one tune is always appreciated by its fanbase. Hopefully we find them on the touring circuit again soon.
