British band, Holy Pinto provides a varying amount of musical influences. From the quirkiness of Say Anything to the poetic words of Death Cab For Cutie, this two-piece are the game changer of indie music. With their latest offering of Stenography, it is a short and sweet summation of their sharpness and attitude in their musicianship. Many will delight in this three-song sampler and you’ll feel less of a freak knowing that it’s possible that a band like this exist and that’s pretty fucking cool.
I must admit that it was a little strange to listen to this band, because it was something that didn’t resonate with me at first. However, it encouraged me to appreciate Say Anything’s underrated quirkiness in hits such as “A Walk Through Hell” and “Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too.” The greatest thing about this EP is that its obscurity doesn’t make you feel awkward as it bounces between genres of alternative rock/indie music. They clearly hold themselves to a high regard by making everything listenable using similar elements done by the likes of Motion City Soundtrack and Weezer. Holy Pinto mesmerises you through each alt-rock sound dynamic and tongue-in-cheek lyrical verse.
“Tooth” craves the presence of vengeance and next thing you know, you’ll be singing parts of it to the next person that pisses you off. It’s by far impressive that for a two-piece, they bring equal loudness of a full band and for that to be achieved is like winning the lottery. There’s an insane catchiness going as well with its candied drum work and epic guitar strumming.
Furthermore, listening to “Swim” feels like a modern-day age track off 2007’s Juno Soundtrack, with lyrics forming that all-too familiar angst we felt as teenagers. No one likes to admit it, but being an adolescent in any time period is difficult and as this release unfolds, the band don’t keep their upbeat signature sound for too long. We see this as “Daughter” grasps a darker side to the storytelling part, bringing feelings of confusion and distrust and from here, the EP comes to a halt and your mind begins to wonder.
‘Daring to be different’ is a statement that reflects the style of Stenography and Holy Pinto have brought a sound that angles indie/alternative rock music in a clever way. For the most part, you won’t feel ripped off and you’ll get what you have paid for – maybe even more.
