It’s refreshing to come across a band that’s raw, emotive and just plain honest when it comes to their music. Italian rockers of Home by Three make a lasting impression with their debut album, Desert, focusing on the emo/alternative rock genre, with influences from the likes of Jimmy Eat World, The Early November and The Get Up Kids.
Capturing the essence of deep, husky vocals, “No One’s Boy” is a reflection of the band’s similarities to Jimmy Eat World. There’s energetic vibes in the drumming sequence, with a punk rock twist, creating an edgy start to the album. Following on, the second track intensifies with emotive vocals in “Mating Calls” as the electrifying guitar riffs hint at a Green Day influence. The tune mellows out and their creativity is realised before exploring the depths of the whole album.
It’s hard to give “Some Say” a miss once it comes on, as the number has a beautiful rhythmic guitar introduction; it sounds like something that could’ve been taken from either Bleed American or Chase This Light by Jimmy Eat World. You can sense the passion through the flawless, raw instrumentals and the band keep it real with their lyrics, giving their music the attention it deserves.
Home by Three are poetic and emotional in their music however, the track “Saving Clovers” is the exception to the rule and offers an upbeat number. Different parts of the song are slowed down making it seem like a mediocre track, however – they reel you in again by surprise, fusing in different melodies and rhythms that come from both alternative/emo roots.
Highly recommended for emo/alternative lovers, Home By Three’s Desert is a worthy musical investment. For a record that’s both emotional and honest, this one is best saved for a rainy day.
