Album Review: Lolawolf – Every Fucking Day (2015 EP)

LOLAWOLF released their latest summery EP Every Fucking Day earlier this year – in our winter, to be exact. The brief album lays somewhere in minimalist hip hop and electronica. The trippy trio, fronted by Zoë Kravitz, have toured with the likes of Lilly Allen and Miley. It’ll be interesting to see if they launch into another studio album or continue dropping these tasty snippets of tunes.

“Every Fucking Day” hits you with James Levy’s piercing keys and Jimmy Giannopoulos’ not-fucking-around bass. Daily house parties and lingering thoughts of old love is the picture painted in the titular track. “Housekey” is another frighteningly down to earth and realistic portrayal of break-ups. It seems like Levy’s keyboard gets the focus in most tracks of this minimalist style.

It becomes clear midway through the EP that there isn’t the same eclectic and lurching nature of previous songs. Previous tracks like “Calm Down” and “AYO” feel like a wild car chase while the Every Fucking Day EP winds down into a sense of meditation and reflection.

“Real4U” and “Normally I Get It” still maintain the fun nature of LOLAWOLF’S tracks. They actively promote making music for music’s sake and not getting sucked into the chart-topping whirlpool and other pursuits of fame. It’s this exact attitude that keeps their songs light and fun like Tkay Maidza or Miley’s newest songs.

“Risky Business” brings back some of that creative spirit that their studio album had. Morphed voices and glitched sounds are a solid closer on this EP. Though it’s a short-lived track it’s a nice glimpse into where LOLAWOLF are headed. Whether the eclectic trio move into another studio album project or continue to tour will as always have an unpredictable answer.
