Album Review: Tame Impala – Currents B-Sides & Remixes (2017 EP)

If you’ve been craving new Tame Impala, then this one’s for you.

After two years since Currents hit home sending shockwaves through the nation, frontman Kevin Parker has decided to revisit the group’s third LP, giving fans their well needed pick-me-up.

Sparing three B-sides and two remixes, Parker isn’t holding back – the EP makes up just under 30 minutes worth of solid bangers, including Soulwax‘s  10 minute remix of “Let It Happen”. And boy, we’re pretty excited.

The retake of the classic Tame Impala tune stands out in the crowd – overpowering in its nature. Although the hype for the Soulwax remix has already been loved and adored since it’s original release in 2015, it’s still undoubtedly one fans won’t forget.

Premiering the lead single of the EP on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show on Nov 16, “List Of People (To Try And Forget About)”, the track was placed in Lowe’s World Record. Parker explained that he began writing the track between the end of their second studio album in 2012, Lonerism, and the beginning of their work on Currents. “One of the reasons it didn’t end up on the album (Currents) was that it was started on so early and I was so over it by the time I was finishing the album…I was really kind of like satisfied with it as a song and as a chunk of my creativity and emotion and stuff.”

The lead single leads the way on what is to come on the record, rectifying the original Tame Impala sound. Creating a sense of humble beginnings for Parker, the track is followed by the hypnotic slow-burner “Powerlines” – and what even is a Tame Impala album without a super cool instrumental?

“Taxi’s Here” speaks for Parker’s soft side, angelic and delicate in its nature. The mellow sound can soothe anyone from having a bad day. The track is a plain example of the bands capacity to array to different speeds and be diverse in sound. The record also features a remix of “Reality In Motion”, produced by GUM, the solo project of Tame Impala’s Jay Watson.

The record is featured on the Collectors Edition of Currents, which includes the album on limited edition red marbled vinyl with alternate artworks.

Sticking to their roots, Tame Impala seems to tick every box in the playing field and keeping their sound exactly the way it wants to be heard – so when you’re flicking through radio stations, you’ll know when you’re listening to a Tame Impala track.
