Album Review: Trigger Jackets – Skinny (2013 LP)

Trigger Jackets. The name alone screams indie rock, perhaps with a tinge of surfer rock, maybe a couple of jaunty riffs similar to Ball Park Music? Skinny boys in their skinny jeans and ironic glasses.

Thankfully, in reality, Trigger Jackets bucks the indie trend. Their latest release, debut full length, Skinny, is all things great and good about dirty, dirty rock-and-roll with a heavy dose of garage grunge for good measure.

The three-piece from the west coast released their first single, ‘Give Me Your Ocean’, late last month. And whilst it’s a beauty of a rock and roll song, the album holds many more grungy gems including ‘March to the Limelight’ and ‘Sugarcoat’ with their raucous and sweaty bass lines and shout out loud lyrics.

Tracks such as ‘Shaking Hands’ and ‘The Lonliest Times’ are throwbacks to Aussie rock legends The Superjesus and Grinspoon, capturing the easy and enduring simplicity of rock music played well without any gimmicks.

Admittedly, this is not the album for anyone wanting a deep and meaningful album to sit through and analyse. The lyrics are simple, catchy and repetitive. Great for singing along and moshing to but nothing groundbreaking. This album is for those who like their music loud, dishevelled, uncomplicated and without pretentious airs.

Overall, the album is for any Aussie rock fan with a fondness for great bass lines. A promising debut album which reeks of the promise of great things to come from this three piece. Perhaps a smidgen more lyrical development and bit more experimentation with tempos and song patterns and these boys could be well one their way to rock greatness.

Review Score: 8.5 out of 10.
