Anohni, Poliça, Hiatus Kaiyote and more to feature in free Vivid Live artist talks

A series of free creative conversations have been announced as part of this year’s Vivid LIVE in the form of “Artist Talks”, featuring rare and in-depth discussions with the likes of Anohni, Ta-ku, Poliça and Wafia, alongside a live recording of popular podcast Song Explored (featuring Hiatus Kaiyote) and much more.

In addition to the free events, the festival will also feature New Order in Conversation with Mark Reeder and Max Richter in conversation with Paul Morley, with tickets for both events from $25. Tickets go on sale Monday 16 May, 9am, with registration required for the free events to guarantee entry.

The events promise insight into the thought and inspirations behind the processes of artists featured in this year’s VIVID LIVE line-up. Ben Marshall (pictured), Festival Curator for Vivid LIVE and the Sydney Opera House’s Head of Contemporary Music, said of the announcement, “Every artist at Vivid LIVE has been chosen for the ambition and excellence of their work and it’s important to us that the Opera House provides opportunities to not just see incredible artists perform but to also hear them reflect on their creative processes.”

Highlights of the talks to feature include:

  • New Order in a rare public conversation with filmmaker, producer and MFS label head Mark Reeder, discussing Factory Records, the rise and fall of Joy Division, and the sonic world of Manchester
  • Double J host, radio journalist and former Spicks & Specks captain Myf Warhurst talking to Australia’s finest, including Ta-ku, Goodgod’s Jimmy Sing with Mad Racket founder and DJ Simon Caldwell and Vivid LIVE curator Ben Marshall.
  • Aficinados from MusicNSW leading an all-Australian panel discussion on the state of the home-grown electronic music – particularly for women – with Ta-ku collaborator Wafia, and Kučka, vocalist to both Flume and A$AP Rocky.
  • Song Exploder host Hrishikesh Hirway’s taking apart Hiatus Kaiyote’s Grammy-nominated songs, piece by piece, in a live session with the band for a podcast that reveals how music is made and the personal stories behind the lyrics and melodies.
