This Saturday, Valentine’s Day at the Taronga Zoo will see Anthony Callea take on the songs of George Michael in a very special concert as part of the Zoo’s Twilight at Taronga series – proudly presented by the AU review! In anticipation of the event, we asked Callea to share with us his five favourite George Michael songs. And in no particular order, here they are…
AMAZING
I remember waiting outside HMV in Bourke Street for the doors to open to be one of the 1st to purchase this song and the album Patience. As soon as I heard it, I fell in love with it.
I KNEW YOU WERE WAITING
Nothing is more exciting than a great collaboration between two artists and Aretha and George took that concept to another level! I was only a young kid when this was released so I grew up with it and I suppose from a young age, I just loved and appreciated “real” singers and Aretha and George are just that!
ONE MORE TRY
The lyrics to this song are pure honesty. You feel the heartache and desperation of wanting to feel love but not wanting to be hurt by it once again. It’s George at his finest vocally and I love that the title of the song is only heard once and are the last 3 words of the song. It’s all class.
JESUS TO A CHILD
I would say this song is one of the most beautifully written and honest songs from George Michael’s string of hits. Written at a time when he was at one of his lowest times personally, writing this song was the turning point for George in helping him move forward from the death of his lover. I have a love hate relationship with this song as it’s so beautiful and such an iconic song yet, one of the most difficult to deliver.
CARELESS WHISPER
Who doesn’t love an amazing sax feature…… It’s one of those songs that when it starts, you get a rush of memories coming back to you and goosebumps. It’s definitely one of mine and a crowd favourite when the band and I perform it live.
