Guest Playlist: Behind Crimson Eyes share the songs that helped bring latest single “Burn It Down” to life

Melbourne metalcore act Behind Crimson Eyes have just dropped new single “Burn It Down“. It’s the latest from upcoming EP An Exodus From Eden, which will also be the band’s last. A farewell tour has been announced to accompany the release – and ensure fans get one last run around the mosh pit!

To celebrate the release of “Burn It Down”, frontman Josh Stuart has put together a list of tracks that inspired its creation. We might be losing an Aussie great this year, but there’s bound to be a song or two in here that will help you find someone to fill the void!

Start up the playlist and read more about the chosen tracks below.

Bad Omens – “Artificial Suicide”

This is the most aggressive song on the album The Death Of Piece of Mind. And we wanted to try and capture some of that same emotion and anger with “Burn It Down”. Noah’s incredible heavy vocals definitely inspired me to incorporate a lot more low, heavier screams than I had previously done.

Polaris – “Regress”

Polaris are just so fucking good! They are able to integrate heavy verse vocals and clean melodic choruses so well. It’s really hard to do that without making it sound like two different songs, and “Burn It Down” has a very similar heavy/clean format.

The Plot In You – “Forgotten”

This song has such grit and anger in the vocal performance. Landon sounds like he is spitting down the mic. I used it as some inspiration for my vocals in the first verse and breakdown.

If I Were You – “Lost”

This band isn’t very well known, but they have such a cool mix of melodic and heavy parts in their songs. They also have some really nice production elements that make the song interesting from start to finish.

Mick Gordon – “Rip & Tear”

Mick essentially created a whole metal sub genre when he wrote the soundtrack for the Doom video game. It has so many amazing production elements and cool little moments in the song that we used for inspiration, especially in the intro synth and plucked string lines.

Rage Against The Machine – “Testify”

RATM are one of my all time favourite bands! Ever since I was a kid yelling “fuck you I wont do what you tell me!” it has just appealed to me. The fact that their music stood for something meaningful, that they called out injustice and inequality, just spoke to me.

Although I’ve written several political songs in the past, given the moment we are living in now, I just felt compelled to write something expressing how angry I am.

I Prevail – “Bow Down”

This is such classic metalcore! Modern metal is full of synths and electronic elements to make it sound heavy and huge, and “Bow Down” is a great example of that. So we referenced how they use that stuff to bring tension and intensity to parts.

Architects – “Whiplash”

This song came out when we were in the middle of recording, and it has such incredible energy. Although “Burn It Down” was written well before this song came out, it has a lot of similarities with its message, tone and aggression, so it made sense to reference it for production, mixing and mastering aspects.

SpiritBox – “Perfect Soul”

This is another song that came out while we were already in the studio, so it didn’t contribute to the song writing, but it did help us with the production elements. And since we have a female vocalist in the chorus of “Burn It Down”, it also gave us a bar to aim for, even if that bar was really, really high! This is definitely my favourite Spiritbox song now!
