It’s a rare occasion to be greeted to legends of hip hop in one of the smaller clubs in town. Sure, it might happen overseas, but not so much in Australia. Thankfully, thanks to the launch of Bitch Beer at the Trademark Hotel, the rarity occurred, with Naughty By Nature hitting the stage to a highly intoxicated, highly excitable and energetic crowd. Despite keeping them waiting for almost 2 hours, the duo didn’t disappoint.
Opening with one of their most popular tracks “O.P.P.”, they showed they were here to party, and went on to play bits and pieces of their own material, mixed in with the party starters from their hip hop brethren – and just about anything else they could think of. DMX’s “Up In Here” made an appearance, and so did Men and Work’s “Land Down Under”. Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds”, Black Eyed Peas, 2Pac, Sugarhill Gang “Rapper’s Delight” were among the rest of the pack. They played the songs that the crowd would know, and it kept them dancing and singing along from start to finish.
It might be almost 20 years since they were the hottest hip hop act on the planet, but they retain the energy and presence that keep the crowds hooked. They came to party, and they delivered a show that few would forget. Either that or they’ll never remember…
