Casey Barnes takes us behind the scenes of filming the music video for “Get To Know Ya”

Casey Barnes

Country music star Casey Barnes has today released “Get To Know Ya” from his upcoming album, Light It Up, which will drop on Friday 25th February. Reflecting on two years of cancelled tours, posphoned shows and missing the interation with his audience, “Get To Know Ya” is the perfect salve for those missing connecting with friends and family.

Despite the lockdowns, Casey has had a fruitful last eighteen months. He had the major hit, “God Took His Time On You” and 2021’s most-played country radio song “Come Turn Me On”, both good tidings for the upcoming album release. You can pre-order the album HERE, including various merch bundles.

Casey gives insight into the genesis of the track:  “That’s what this single is all about… that instant connection when you lay eyes on someone for the first time. The nervous feeling about getting to know them and hoping they feel the same way because in your eyes, they’re that one in a million. This single is one of my favourite songs on the album and I’m so excited to finally get it out there!”

“Get To Know Ya” is jam packed with big hooks, country music feels and destined to be popular on the large stage.  It’s summery, it’s fun, upbeat and oozes good times. As well as the release of the track, Casey has put together a video to accompany it. He had a formidable team working on it, including producers Joel & Rowena Rasmussen and Jason Lewis.

We caught up with Casey, and he has given us an insiders’ look at what happened behind the scenes of filming the video for “Get To Know Ya”.

Behind the scenes of filming the video for “Get To Know Ya” – by Casey Barnes

On Working With The Directors

I’ve been wanting to work with Rowena and Joel again for the last 2 years but it’s been tough with them being based in Sydney, border closures and not being able to connect in person. They’ve shot a couple of my favourite clips in the past and as soon as I showed them this song, they were excited and could see where they could take it all visually. It’s a BIG call but I think this is my favourite music video we’ve ever shot!

The Storyline ….

All the credit here goes to Rowena and Joel Rasmussen from J-Town Creative – they just nailed this clip. The song is all about that feeling of meeting someone for the first time, the nervousness, that spark and then how the relationship builds from there. As I mentioned Ro and Joel have been able to turn this clip into a mini short film which documents this amazing adventure, how the couple meet and a proceeding road trip that the couple goes on with their friends…. it perfectly captures that Summer time vibe and you can’t help but be left with a smile on your face at the end

On The Start of the clip

Speaking of being lucky, we were so fortunate to be able to use two of the most incredible people to star in the clip. Jackie Chambers and David McLean who also happen to be two of the most sought-after dancers in the country as well. They both absolutely nailed their parts and, in a way, turned the music video into a mini short film of their adventures

On The Car

For all of my parts in the video we went to a lot of trouble to find the right car and were lucky enough to source this incredible (and rare) 1967 GT500 Shelby Mustang. For those that remember the movie Gone in 60 Seconds you’d recall seeing this same car which was called ‘Eleanor’. The interesting back story is the owner has been a HUGE Mustang fan for the last 40+ years, happened to put an entry in a raffle and won the car which is rumoured to be worth over $180,000! And I can tell you…. it goes like the clappers!!

On Driving The Car

I don’t think I’ve EVER been more nervous driving a car before ha….we were so lucky that the owner trusted me driving it for the day, even for the scene right at the start of the clip where I had to plant it and do a burnout. To tie in with the rest of the clip we wanted to find the right location and shot all of my stuff in and around northern NSW…. big open country roads, cane fields and amazing scenery. I must admit, I didn’t really want to hand the keys back at the end of the shoot ha ha !

On changing up the style of his music videos

I think what sets this apart from other videos I’ve done is it’s really like a mini short film…. it keeps you engaged the whole way thru and my favourite scenes in the whole video are actually towards the end (without giving too much away) so it keeps you watching right to the last second!
