On Friday and Saturday afternoons, as part of the King Street Wharf Festival in Sydney, the restaurants that live on the wharf took part in a two day event called “On The Wharf”. It was a chance to enjoy tasting plates from restaurants like The Malaya (soon to celebrate their fiftieth birthday!), Kobe Jones, Georges Mediterranean, La Cita and many more…
I went down on Friday afternoon, just as the rain gave up for the afternoon, and enjoyed some samples from three fantastic restaurants. I started with Casa Di Nico, which was offering arancini balls, calamari and two types of pasta. I enjoyed some Penne a la Carbonara and a Spaghetti Bolognese for $10 – and they even threw in an Arancini ball for good measure! It was a feast to say the least, and some freshly shaved Parmesan on the pasta topped it off nicely. Both pastas were exactly what you’d expect them to be, with a whole heap more flavour than what you’d normally expect from a street fair. Well, we are talking about some great restaurants here, so I suppose you’d expect no less.
I moved onto I Thai next, where I had a difficult choice to make between the Green Curry Chicken with Rice and the Pad Thai with Chicken, both looking delicious, and both only $10. I went for the Pad Thai which was superb, though by the time I’d finished it, I could hardly imagine fitting in more food – though I had one more stall to go.
To finish things off I went to Steersons Steakhouse, where I had the option of the Petite Streak or the Mini Beef Bourguignoone Pie. I asked which would be the lighter dish, and was assured that the petite streak would be the way to go. But when a 180g steak arrived with potato salad and beetroot, I think they misunderstood what I meant by “light”. But, as a capable (occasional) food reviewer, I cleaned the plate off. Not that it was that hard; the steak was a perfectly cooked medium rare, and mouthwateringly tasty. The sort that just melts in your mouth. And the red wine jus that covered it was divine. I definitely ate too much food. But was it worth it? Definitely.
