Newcastle indie-pop duo The TryOuts have given us a tasty preview of their debut EP Nothing Bad is Ever Going to Happen, out tomorrow. In support of the EP, they will be heading out on a six-date national tour this Saturday in Newcastle.
The TryOuts are married couple Chelsea Reed (drums/vocals) and David Macmichael (guitar/vocals). Chelsea met David when living in French Canada, who moved back with her due to an expiring Visa after a tour together. Nothing Bad is Ever Going to Happen discusses love, loss and time while chronicling their unique origin story.
The five-track project, featuring playful lead single “Washer”, boasts a special affection with strut and swagger. From the rock guitars and crooning vocals of “It is What it is” to the emotive ballad “Curtains”, the EP is wholesome yet provocative. A standout is “What’s it Gonna Be”, a groovy cut about living abroad with southern-tinged vocals and dusty riffs.
“Nothing Bad is Ever Going to Happen is a collection of songs we’ve been working on since forming,” the band explains. “It covers a range of styles we incorporate as a two piece, and covers autobiographical themes of heartache, rejection, mental health, and slacking off while life passes you by.”
The EP was recorded at Rancho Relaxo Studios (The Simpsons, anyone?) by Shaun Gaida (The Mountains), mixed and produced by Jack Moffitt (The Preatures), and mastered by Andrew Edgson (Matt Corby) at 301 Studios.
“Getting to work with Jack Moffitt was such a treat,” David says. “He approached the songs as they deserved to be treated with a minimalistic clean style of production that leaned into the band’s strengths.”
The TryOuts will be stopping by Newcastle, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide and Sydney in November, supported by Berlyn, Lawson Hull and more. You can get tickets to their Sydney show at The Vanguard on 16 November HERE. Follow the band on Facebook and Instagram for more.
