Exclusive EP Premiere: Butterknife – Lilith (2024 EP)

Butterknife

Newcastle/ Awabakal’s alternative-pop fem four-piece band Butterknife have been making waves in the local scene since they dropped their 2019 debut single, “misty”, which has amassed over 1.8 million streams on Spotify alone. Since then, they have gone from strength to strength, and we are thrilled today to be premiering their debut EP, Lilith, ahead of its release on Friday.

Known for their indie pop/rock sound, Lilith has taken the band into a slightly darker direction, with a wee taste of grunge amongst the mix. We’re all for the evolution of their sound. They’ve ramped up the intensity. The songs lean into the angst of early adulthood and showcase all the feels of that period – heartbreak, anger, love and the emotion that travels with the journey into unbridled independence.

At eight tracks long, it’s a generous length for an EP. It’s hard to pick favourites, but track 4, “shitty way to show that you care” stands out.  It feels personal and is gloriously angry. The lead track “mother nature” has a pulsating bassline, is loaded with synths and echoing vocals and swirls and swirls. The EP finishes with the punk-laden visceral “GOD COMPLEX”, their most recent single. Butterknife has shown a willingness to stretch themselves creatively on their debut EP. It has paid off in spades.

You’ll be able to catch Butterknife at the fabulous Gumball Festival this long weekend. It’s one of our favourite festivals, and a good time is guaranteed.

You can pre-save the EP HERE. Turn up the volume and give Lilith a spin – it’s a powerful debut from the talented Butterknife.
