Singer/songwriter Marcus Wynwood hails from Lutruwita/Tasmania and has carved a name for himself for his fierce and energetic guitar-driven blend of indie rock, post-punk and power-pop. We’re thrilled today to be premiering his new EP, the explosive Killerbites, ahead of its release tomorrow.
The EP is a collection of six songs featuring honest and artful songwriting, incredible guitars and precision production. These tunes have a ferocity and tautness, which skillfully convey all the feelings of growing and maturing, with passionate melodies and blistering guitars.
“Simulation” was the lead single and released last month. It’s a searing, passion-filled take on the existential sense of uncertainty. There is a fun reference to the Talking Heads classic, “Once In A Lifetime”, as he muses upon this ‘beautiful house’.
“Don’t Give Up” is a potent reminder that when all seems lost, you can get off the floor and have another crack. The guitars on this are glorious.
“Lies” has a nostalgic pub-rock grunge feel to it. Winding back the energy a little, “Never Change” features some beautiful acoustic guitars before switching up a gear again with a driving beat and electric guitar nirvana. “Another Coffee” captures those moments where we reach into the memory banks, wanting to relive our youth.
Marcus gives us his take on the songs within the EP: “Killerbites is a collection of songs that cover a range of emotions I’ve experienced over the last few years. The “killer” are the feels, and the “bites” are the songs. The EP aims to explore themes we’ve all experienced in our lives; thoughts we’ve all had or feelings we’ve all felt – all through my own lens. Some of the songs have been around for a couple of years, and some are only weeks old, but they all explore ideas ranging from self-doubt and helplessness; to resilience and strength; to searching for meaning and having optimism for the future. I hope you enjoy these Killerbites, and you find your own meaning in them – I hope they mean something to you as they do me.”
Marcus is a man of many talents. He played all the instruments on the EP, which he then tracked at his home studio in Penguin, Lutruwita /Tasmania. He writes about the genesis of the songs on the EP: “Most of the songs started out as ideas played on my acoustic guitar and recorded as Voice Memos on my phone. I always keep my phone handy just in case. The next step was to sift through these ideas and find any good bits. I really enjoy the song writing process and recording and producing.
Before recording under his own name, Marcus played lead guitar and shared songwriting duties with the legendary punk band Captives, who played with the likes of Shihad, The Damned, COG, Tumbleweed, 28 Days and The Sweet. You might have caught them at some of your favourite festivals, including Falls Festival and Party In The Paddock.
Fans of The Pixies, Talking Heads and Frank Turner should find plenty to love here.
Enjoy our premiere of Killerbites from Marcus Wynwood, before its release tomorrow.
