Exclusive EP Premiere: Slow Cinema – self-titled (2024 EP)

Slow Cinema

Slow Cinema is an indie-rock quintet from Newcastle/Mulubinba who we fell in love with in 20200 when we premiered their emotive single “Balta”.  They’ve recently dropped two singles, “Magic Potion” and “Pocket Knife”, and we are stoked today to be premiering their new self-titled EP with three more stellar tracks.

Keen Slow Cinema fans have been waiting patiently for a body of work like this, and finally, it’s here! About the EP, the band writes:  “After releasing 4 independent singles since our inception in 2021, we decided it was time to put together a body of work where our fans, new and old, can hear who we truly are. Our debut EP became a 5 track, diverse piece of work. With sounds varying from pop rock and souring anthemic tracks, with a vest of stoner rock and southern blues with a bitta glam splashed in for style.”

The opening track, “Pouring Rain”, gives us some Arctic Monkey vibes with a little bit of glam rock thrown in for good measure. It’s grand and fabulous. Keeping up the energy, “Pocket Knife” is brilliantly anthemic, descriptive and infectious. With a killer guitar riff, you will get your dancing shoes on for this one.

Another track with an old-school killer guitar solo is “Magic Potion”. I was getting some ’70s flashbacks on this one.  The genres are well and truly traversed in “747”, with kick-arse guitars again to the fore. Slowing things up on the final track, you can get the lighters out for “Blessings”, a poignant and touching song that is the perfect end to the EP. I reckon you’ll be keen on this if you love DMA’S.

So yes, it’s a ripper of an EP. Great songwriting, incredible guitars, and the vocals of lead singer Tyler Gibb are top-shelf, cracking harmonies and superb production.

The band are about to embark on a tour of NSW to celebrate the release of the EP. It kicks off this Saturday in Wonnarua/Maitland at the Family Hotel and finishes on Friday, the 3rd of May, in their hometown at The Stag And Hunter Hotel. Check below for all the details.

The EP was produced and mixed by Jack Nigro (DMA’s, The Terrys, Pacific Avenue, Middle Kids) at Grove Studios.

So, do enjoy our premiere of the self-titled debut EP, from Slow Cinema, before its release on Friday.  And give it a pre-save HERE, it helps with the algorithm apparently!
