Meanjin/Brisbane-based alt-pop group JUNO have teamed up with vocalist Jude Korab to create the emotive and gripping new track, “nobody loves you when you’re down”.
The band only have a handfull of releases, but have already gathered an ardent following. The track follows on from the upbeat “moonboy” that was released in June this year.
Opening with swirling synths, the gorgeous warm and intimate vocals of lead singer Kahlia Ferguson set the mood, before Jude Korab enters the fray with his silky voice. It is melancholic yet the harmonies have a sensual tenderness, cocooned by the lush instrumentation. As the track heads towards the outro, the emotions are ratched up a notch with crackling harmonies, driving home the message, so neatly encapsulated within the title.
Yes, life isn’t always peaches and cream. Inevitably there are ups and downs, yet it’s during the tough times when support is needed, that the friendship group can seemingly appear much smaller, as Kahlia explains:
“‘nobody loves you when you’re down’ is a song about toxic friendships that bail on you whenever you’re going through hard times. I’ve had periods of time where my mental health has suffered and life has hit me with a lot of curve balls, and communication has just slowly dropped off with certain people in my life. Those friends are always so happy and keen to be there when you’re down to party and drink and dance, but conveniently disappear when you really need them. I drew a lot of inspiration from the TV show Euphoria. The imagery and themes really got into my head after bingeing both seasons.”
“nobody loves you when you’re down” was produced, mixed and mastered by band member Sam Woods and Jude Korab.
