It is always an absolute treat to be premiering the debut release for an artist, and today we have that privilege with “Blind” from LAVELIN, who hails from Meanjin (Brisbane) and Yugambeh (Gold Coast). The song is a poignant take on a relationship that didn’t work out, showcasing a voice that sends shivers, powered along by a pumped-up beat that thumps and rocks.
The melody is captivating, and the lyrics are on point and heartbreakingly honest, from the searing take, “He’s the coldest cold I’ve ever known”, to the heartbreak and reflective “My babe’s blind to the real me, only sees what he wants to see”, LAVELIN lays it all out there.
About the track, LAVELIN writes: “‘Blind’ is a song about being in love with someone who doesn’t see you for who you truly are, but rather for who they want you to be. It was inspired by a tumultuous heartbreak and conveys the deep desire to be fully known and loved, while also acknowledging that one is not. The interpretation of why this happens is left to the listener, as it often is in life. It raises the question of why others don’t hold us in the ways we desire.”
This is a punchy track that belies the difficult situation that inspired it. The melody is a bop, the chorus a joyous ride, and there’s an inspiring positivity in letting go of a relationship that isn’t meant to be. The refrain of “bla bla bla-bla, bla bla bla-bla, blind” is catchy af. LAVELIN is one to watch.
It may be her debut release, but LAVELIN has laid down the foundations. She was the JMC QLD’s 2022 Alumni Act of the Year, has performed sold-out shows and also co-written with the likes of Ian Haug of Powderfinger. She has also had support slots for The Delta Riggs, Hachiku and Iluka.
