There must be something in the water in Mulubinba/Newcastle as it has been churning out some stellar bands recently. Another one which has us pumped is Loons, who have been serving up fabulous surf rock and today we are stoked to be premiering their new tune, the anthemic “Money Honey”, ahead of its release on Thursday.
Lead singer Elijah Cairns‘ rich vocals are packed with emotions on “Money Honey”. This is a cathartic gem as he explores the failure of a relationship. The guitars bolster and caress his vocals, with drums that keep it propelling along. You can sense the collision of ambition and desires, and its associated frustration, yet it has an upbeat anthemic feel to it. The finale of this bittersweet song is triumphant and euphoric.
Loons talk about the inspiration behind “Money Honey”: “Elijah wrote it at a time when he felt that his world was collapsing around him and his partner at the time had seemingly changed her priorities and values in the relationship to achieve financial success. After much work, the song came together and each member wrote fresh parts on their selected instruments to change what had been a raw acoustic song into an indie rock anthem.”
The band kicked off in 2019 and has built a solid following in their hometown, and during this time have shared stages with the likes of The Terrys, Surf Trash, Shag Rock, Dune Rats, The Rions, Grinspoon and The Grogans. They have also sold out headline gigs at the mighty King Street Warehouse in Newcastle. With this solid success in their hometown, and forays into Sydney and beyond, it’s only a matter of time ’til they are playing a major headline tour around the country.
Loons took inspiration from bands such as Spacey Jane, Lime Cordiale and Arctic Monkey during their formative years, and shared that “We all jammed together as kids, playing in multiple ensembles and bands. Bailey and Elijah are childhood best mates and grew up playing together, gaining a really strong musical connection. Ely played in many bands and found himself in a couple of Elijah’s early projects throughout their teen years.”
The band has gigs lined up in Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle in September, so if you get the chance, do head along. All the dates are below. Support live music!
The track was produced by Jack Nigro (Pacific Avenue, The Terrys, DICE). It will be released on Thursday, and be sure to pre-save it HERE.
