Cathartic music can come in many forms, and Bundjalung/Byron Bay-based indie-punk outfit Off Judy have delivered an absolute belter in “Scared of The Dog”, a high-octane singalong that we have the pleasure of premiering today, ahead of its release on Friday, 25th October.
The track is a brisk and energetic guitar-driven gem, powered along by passionate vocals, a pounding bassline, with the percussion keeping it in the right lane. “Scared of The Dog” skilfully and tenderly brings to life the challenge of living with the spectre of depression living just ’round the corner. The song is a great reminder to hug your mates and check in with them frequently.
Lead vocalist Finn Mcildowie talks about the inspiration behind the track: “The ‘dog’ in ‘Scared Of The Dog’ is the black dog. The track’s theme is to continue enjoying life even though the black dog is always looming. Keeping it at bay but never giving in to it. Acknowledging it’s there but keeping it just out of reach.”
“Scared of The Dog” was produced and mixed by Alain Decarne (Les Krills, Tropical Zombie).
We’ve also have the first look at the video which accompanies the track. It was created by the band themselves on their recent tour: “We filmed a home-made video of our three-month tour through Europe and The UK, carrying with us a Sony DCR-SX43 handycam to capture the essence of the journey. There’s nothing better than going on tour with your mates. We met many amazing people, played at many different venues and festivals and were constantly looked after by those we met along the way. There are clips of dogs sprinkled in key parts throughout the clip to indicate the presence of the (black) dog always looming. Enjoy life, it’s not always easy, so embrace the good times when you can whilst acknowledging the tough ones”.
The boys have had a busy run of late. They’ve just finished a massive UK/Europe tour finishing off at the epic Oktoberfest festival in Munich.
