It’s a big day for Adelaide songwriter Ollie English. Set to support Robbie Williams in his hometown this evening after taking out a coveted spot for South Australian artists at the annual Clipsal 500 – via the ‘Bands on Track’ competition – today, English also unveils his newest piece of music, “How Many Times”.
English’s voice growls from the onset. “I’m a fool for you, I’m a wreck and you know it too,” he sings, immediately matching up to the drama of the song’s arrangement. It’s a simple premise; simmering keys, haunting melodies and a crashing coupling of guitar and percussion that buoys English’s intoxicating blues vocals, as they soar through the chorus.
A definite new chapter for English, musically, “How Many Times” demonstrates a harder edge to his songwriting while in the delivery, English has upped his own game. With a vocal punch akin to the likes of Cameron Avery, and an endearing presence similar to Allen Stone and (to a lesser extent) Matt Corby, English is definitely positioning himself as one to watch in 2018. “How Many Times” is a great kick off point.
