Melbourne based singer/songwriter Sunset Salore has been delivering enchanting alt pop since her debut in 2019. The second half of 2024 is shaping up to be a success for the artist, with the release last month of the incisive “Call It”, and we are thrilled to be premiering her latest single, the gorgeous “Mystery and Magic”. The two singles will be on her upcoming debut EP, Love Kills The Monsters, to be released on the 4th of October.
Sunset Salore – what a voice! Her vocals are entrancing on “Mystery and Magic”, with slick electronic production, layered and echoing chorus, it’s reminiscent of the mighty Florence + The Machine. There’s a vibrancy to her work that makes it so exciting. Sunset Salore has a knack for zeroing in the little things that define us.
She gave the AU some background into the motivation for the track: “‘Mystery and Magic’ was written to explore the euphoria of learning someone new, and uncovering the unique things that draw you to that person. Instead of an overly sentimental love song, I wanted to focus on the spark in that moment. Lyrically I was exploring the small things in a new situation which stand out as they are, or in metaphor. Melbourne is known for amazing coffee, but in the song this person prefers a nice hot cup of Ceylon, but that is ok. The differences we see in each other add significantly in learning new things to expand your horizons, not narrow them down. It’s about finding someone who compliments or enhances you, and you compliment or enhance them as individuals, not be cookie cutters of each other, or tear apart each other’s differences. Difference can be enriching, and we can grow from that significantly.”
“It’s also about trusting your gut in the moment, not to hesitate when there are no reasons to, even if you’ve had challenging experiences in the past and have been burned by that. The song celebrates that both parties are celebrating each other just as they are with no requirement to change or fit a mould through the learning journey of the relationship. They’re essentially present and enjoying the moments as they arrive. Essentially it’s a track about chemistry, energy and fun.”
“The song evolved during the recording process, and in particular the half time chorus was something I wanted to test out. As soon as we made the changes, producer (Spud Thompson) and I looked at each other and we knew we had to include this in the final track – something about it just worked for us. I felt it really enhanced the groove of the song and accented the bass line which itself was so important for me on this track. I had been spending a lot of time listening to old funk tracks when I was writing this EP, and it was a nod I had wanted to lend to this song in particular. Similarly, I wanted to play with space, and an ebb/flow of the song as it progressed which would hopefully add a layer of interest and consideration throughout.”
We think she is onto a winner here, and we are stoked to be premering it today. Do make sure you pre-save it HERE, ahead of its release on Friday.
