Melbourne easycore five-piece This Space is Ours have shared their punchy new single “My Name” with us ahead of its release tomorrow. The honest pop-punk track is their second offering since 2021’s “Trick or Treat” and a promising glimpse of what’s to come.
Searing riffs and relentless drums open the song as frontwoman Gemma Dunsmore’s husky vocals soar above an energetic verse. Layered guitars and infectious hooks saturate the big chorus before a fervent second verse and a dynamic bridge. Pounding kicks and deft guitarwork bring the chorus back for a final hurrah that will have you pumping your fist in the air as you headbang in the car.
“I wrote the lyrics about the frustrations of being perceived as fragile when you have actually been through a lot and survived it,” Dunsmore explains. “Particularly when dating, I found people would say things such as, “I don’t want to break your heart” and I would find myself thinking, ‘I’m fine and you’re not that important.’”
Drawing influence from the likes of Paramore, Turnstile and Slowly Slowly, This Space is Ours combine passionate vocals with bold instrumentation in refined power. Having shared with stage with bands such as Proposal, We Set Signals and PSTCRDS, they have established themselves as a hungry new act with the skills to match. The new single was recorded at Pony Music, Studio Delos and United Pop and mixed by Beau McKee (Delos, Paperweight, Raised).
“The recording process always makes me so nervous but Beau McKee made it such a fun and relaxed process so that we were comfortable enough to mess around and achieve the sound we wanted,” Dunsmore adds.
“My Name” is available on all streaming platforms 17 Nov. Follow This Space is Ours on Facebook and Instagram for regular updates.
