A genre of music that always seems to bring a big smile is pop/funk, and we’ve got some great exponents in Australia. One who shines brightly is Naarm’s Zachary Leo, and we are beyond excited today to be premiering his latest single, the pulsating “On My Mind”, ahead of its release on Friday. It’s a big week for Zachary, as he is also announcing that he will be dropping his new EP next month, on the 14th of June.
“On My Mind” has an intoxicating groove, which builds and builds, totally enveloping the listener. With a funky bassline and sensual vocals, it effortlessly melds funk, jazz and rock. Some vintage synthesisers add to the sparkle, accompanied by gorgeous harmonies. It’s a summer-soaked immersive journey that hits in so many directions.
Giving us some insight into the song, Zachary writes: “‘On My Mind’ is about trying to reach out to someone close to you to tell them something is wrong but struggling to find the words to explain how you are feeling. The song’s meaning is backed by an upbeat disco/pop-style groove that contradicts the lyrical theme. It kind of represents how I go about my day-to-day life; inside, I am struggling, and on the outside, I am full of beans and ready to take on the day.”
“On My Mind” was produced and mixed by Tobias Priddle and mastered by Pieter De Wagter. Fans of Donny Benet should find plenty of love here.
In the past few years Zacchary has built a solid live following. He has shared the stage with acts such as Cub Sport, Thirsty Merc, Pacific Avenue, Great Gable, Big Words and The Moving Stills, along with multiple sold-out headline shows.
To celebrate the release of the EP, Zachary will be playing a gig at The Bergy Bandroom in Naarm on Saturday, the 27th July.
