Singer-songwriter and multi instrumentalist Hawksley Workman has become something to rely on in Canadian music, making music for over 20 years, releasing 16 albums and performing over 1000 shows worldwide. His creativity and strong vocals have gained him two JUNO awards (Canadian Music Awards) and he has graciously shared his skills to help produce albums for Polaris Prize winners and nominees such as Sarah Slean and Great Big Sea. Hawksley Workman is only days away from starting his Australian Tour and has kindly brought along the gift of new music, today releasing his new single and video “Battlefords” – which we’re excited to present the exclusive premiere of for you.
An ambassador for Canadian culture and creativity, each new release bends ordinary genres and ranges anywhere from classic folk to glam rock. Known for producing full albums in only a few weeks, the new single is as polished and fresh as it is honest and simple.
Battleford is a small town in Canada and fittingly the lyrics focus on “growing up in the 80’s in rural Canada.” The video contrasts simple living with his epic swooping vocals, showing bare country roads, dirty looking lakes and empty playing fields. The windy spring melodies match lyrics like “the best of what a baby-sitter could afford… with enough negotiation,” bringing feelings of reminiscence and parading the importance of finding happiness in the mundane. He claims ‘Battlefields” as easily one of his best songs (a big call after 16 albums) and even admits he wept tears when he finished it.
Hawksley Workman’s innate ability to grasp human essence in any context is captured in this statement saying “Workman is many things to many people in many places, but primarily, he’s a student of the human psyche; an artist in the purest sense of the word, constantly finding fresh and interesting ways to frame and share the world – the people we are and the things we encounter.”
His 17th album is set for release in March 2019 and is said to be packed with endearing hooks, innovative melodies and good old fashioned authenticity. For now, check out “Battlefields” and head along to one of his Australian shows this October and November.
